Fog Display System

If we could express the circumstance of virtual place or detached place both physically or temporally at the space around a person to feel like the person is in the place, we expect to exploit on many fields, for example, simulated experience of past or remote land, media art, entertainment, education, design simulation of architecture or production, and etcetera.
On the Fog Display System, we aim to realize a whole new display technology by projecting on "fog" whose diameter of several micro meters. It is expected to be able to make existing place a borderless display by utilizing the nature of fog that is high in permeability. Furthermore, by controlling position, shape, and density of the fog freely, it is able to create the whole new way of image projection space.
From the closed plane world to the open three-dimensional world, we will create a new way of image projection technology.

The playground space by the media representation of the fog

At the places where children play, like playground, new body expression occur by communicating with others while playing around. In addition, we have studied that using media allows us to create body expression and connect with others. In this research, we thought of supporting playground, the place of communication, by utilizing the media. Therefore, we have brought the following fog screen we have developed and examined the effect. We have developed the system capable of projecting from three directions and controlling two jet types of fog, rectification and diffusion by placing jet unit on a concentric circle. The design policy is to take the naturalness of fog itself, such as interaction with fog, control of the flow and shape of the fog the presence or absence of fog depending on the location, and the visibility of the media from the inside and outside of the fog into the media.

Experience exhibition at the National Center for Child Health and Development

We have asked to experience the fog screen media to the children and parents who visited the National Center for Child Health and Development. Body expression and interaction was produced, and people were playing vividly. We believe the naturalness of fog taken in the media exacted the body expression or interaction from people.

Around-View Fog Screen

In this research, we aim to develop a borderless display which make existing place itself into display with the fog display system. By combining the fog ejection part consists of straight and L-shape, we achieve Around-View Fog Screen as if participants are in the image itself.

Multilayered Fog Screen

In this research, we aim to invent borderless display which displays our existing space itself, by developing a three-dimensional fog projection device. To naturally integrate the real space with the video, we increased the sense of depth and three-dimensional appearance of the video. To do so, we used PWM-controlled ultrasonic atomization to enable to control the thickness of the fine fog which is several micro meters in diameter. Also, we were able to create a multi layered fog-display by developing a linear fog generating unit.

Mobile Fog Display Units

Even if we were able to project fog and invent a borderless-display, , the display shape will still restrict the physical movement of the participants as long as its shape is flat screened. In this research, we are on a development of the mobile-fog-display-unit which is equipped with fog generation mechanism and fog ejection mechanism and mobile mechanism.
The fog generation mechanism generates ultra-fine fog, several micro meters in diameter, with ultrasonic atomization. The fog ejection mechanism prevents the diffusion of the fog using the air curtain and also extends the reach of the fog. The mobile mechanism enables to have all the units remotely and individually controlled. By cooperating the multiple fog display units with all the mechanisms above, we were able to create the fog display in various shapes.
In addition, we found out that the body expression that shows depth was only done in Aerial Drawing System, separated from existing system. Therefore, this unit is effective not only to project videos but also to support creation of body expressions.

Development of Fog Box with the aim to remote support of physical connection

In this research, we aim to investigate a portable fog display called a "fog box". Using this, we focused on creating a system that will make it possible to create three-dimensional body expressions. By using fog as a medium of screening, we can project images with few physical constrains. Therefore, we can express participants in media with a little space.
In addition, since we can see or pass through the fog, the space won't be separated. So, the participants wouldn't feel separated from the others. This enables three- dimensional body expression without being restricted by the display. Furthermore, we succeeded to investigate a system to remote "Yubiawase".
